Pits & Hips: Shoulder + Hip Mobility for a Freer Spine

  • SOMA Movement Studio 112 South Main Street, Suite 100 Unionville, CT, 06085 United States (map)

The shoulders and hips are major movement centers on either end of the torso, and when they don’t move well, the spine often has to compensate. Pits & Hips explores the relationship between shoulder mobility, hip mobility, and freedom of movement through the spine, with special attention to how the appendicular skeleton, the arms and legs, connects with the axial skeleton of the spine, ribs, sacrum, and trunk.

Using the Cadillac Trapeze Table, Barrels, mat exercises, breathing, and light resistance, we’ll work with shoulder flexion, hip extension and rotation, and movement patterns that connect the arms, legs, rib cage, pelvis, and spine.

Rather than simply stretching tight areas, we’ll explore how to create usable range of motion and then use that range with control and strength. We’ll also look at the role of muscles such as the psoas, serratus anterior, rhomboids, and other tissues that help link the limbs to the trunk.

Expect supported mobility work, larger whole-body movements, and plenty of opportunities to discover where your body may be compensating.

No previous Pilates experience is required.
